Planning an Abu Dhabi day trip from Dubai and wondering what is worth your one day in the UAE capital? The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, one of the three museums on Saadiyat Island and then, depending on your mood, either the presidential palace or the theme parks on Yas Island. Abu Dhabi is one hour to an hour and a half by car from our apartments in Dubai Marina, Al Furjan or JVC, and since 30 September 2026 a train runs there from Dubai as well. We wrote this guide for guests who stay with us and want to see the capital: what is worth it, how much it costs in dirhams, how to get there and how to plan the day so that it actually works.
The 2026/27 season brings several changes in Abu Dhabi that older guides do not cover. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque now charges an entry fee and visits must be booked in advance, Saadiyat has two big new museums, and the Guggenheim museum opens on 11 December. We checked prices, opening hours and operations on the operators' websites on 16 October 2026, and every figure links to a source where you can check it again before you travel.

What can you see on an Abu Dhabi day trip from Dubai?
In one day from Dubai you can comfortably see two or three major sights, not more, because the attractions are far apart. Abu Dhabi is not one centre like Downtown Dubai but a group of islands linked by highways, and the taxi ride between the mosque, Saadiyat and Yas takes half an hour or longer. It pays to choose one of two kinds of day:
- Culture: the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Louvre Abu Dhabi or the Zayed National Museum on Saadiyat, and in the evening the Qasr Al Watan presidential palace with its light show.
- Fun with children: a full day on Yas Island, where Ferrari World, Warner Bros. World, the Yas Waterworld water park and SeaWorld sit side by side.
If you have more time, split it into two trips. The mosque and the museums work well with the train, Yas is easier by car.
How do you get from Dubai to Abu Dhabi?
The fastest way is by car or with a driver, the cheapest is the Etihad Rail train, which has run from Dubai to Abu Dhabi since 30 September 2026 with Comfort class tickets from 39 AED. Each option has its catch, though.
By Etihad Rail train
Dubai's Al Yalayis station sits next to Jumeirah Golf Estates, and according to The National a 400 metre walkway links it to Jumeirah Golf Estates station on the Metro Red Line. The train takes 57 to 64 minutes to Abu Dhabi, with five services a day in each direction. According to Gulf News, the first train leaves Dubai at 6:14 and the last at 18:14, while from Abu Dhabi the first leaves at 6:43 and the last one back already at 17:43. Comfort class tickets start at 39 AED and Premium at 109 AED, and the final price depends on the fare type and availability. Tickets are sold on the Etihad Rail website, in the app or at the station machines, and according to Gulf News even five minutes before departure if seats are left.
The catch is at the other end. The Abu Dhabi station is called Mohammed Bin Zayed City and stands opposite Dalma Mall, far from the coast and the main sights. According to The National's guide to the station, the Etihad Rail shuttle bus costs 10 AED, runs only to the Corniche, the ADNEC exhibition centre and Reem Island, and is booked together with your train ticket. There is no shuttle to the mosque, Saadiyat or Yas, so you take a taxi: 15 to 20 minutes to the mosque for 30 to 40 AED, and 30 to 40 minutes to the Louvre on Saadiyat for 60 to 75 AED.
By bus, car or taxi
Intercity buses run by Dubai's RTA go to Abu Dhabi's main bus station from Al Ghubaiba station in old Dubai (route E100, 30 AED) and from Ibn Battuta Mall (route E101), which is closer to Dubai Marina and Al Furjan. By car, one way costs roughly 72 to 85 AED in fuel and toll gates, and a taxi from Dubai 389 to 398 AED. Khaleej Times calculated these prices on 4 October 2026 for a trip from Deira to central Abu Dhabi; from Dubai Marina or Al Furjan the journey is shorter.
| Transport | Price | Time | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Etihad Rail train, Comfort | from 39 AED | 57 to 64 minutes on the train | the Abu Dhabi station is on the edge of the city, last train back at 17:43 |
| Etihad Rail train, Premium | from 109 AED | 57 to 64 minutes on the train | higher class, same services |
| RTA bus E100 | 30 AED | about 3 hours door to door | paid with a nol card, ends at the main bus station |
| Own or rental car | 72 to 85 AED | 1.5 to 2 hours | fuel and toll gates, parking extra |
| Taxi from Dubai | 389 to 398 AED | 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours | waiting time is charged extra |
The second table shows how far it is from our apartments. Al Furjan, Dubai Marina and Arjan are closest to the train, and Yas is just under an hour from Dubai Marina and Al Furjan.
| From | To Al Yalayis station | To the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque | To Yas, Ferrari World | To the Louvre on Saadiyat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Al Furjan | 12 minutes | 69 minutes | 59 minutes | 71 minutes |
| Dubai Marina | 19 minutes | 69 minutes | 59 minutes | 70 minutes |
| Arjan | 20 minutes | 78 minutes | 69 minutes | 80 minutes |
| JVC | 21 minutes | 80 minutes | 70 minutes | 82 minutes |
| Downtown | 32 minutes | 85 minutes | 75 minutes | 87 minutes |
What do you need to know about the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque?
Visitors from outside the UAE pay an entry fee of 10 AED and must book their visit online in advance. According to the mosque's FAQ, Emirates ID holders pay 5 AED, and worshippers coming to pray enter without a ticket. The National reported the new fee in September 2026 and says visitors aged 60 and over enter free. You book your visit and access pass on the visiting hours page with the Book your visit button.
- Opening hours: Saturday to Thursday from 9:00 to 21:00, last entry at 20:30. On Fridays the mosque is open to visitors from 9:00 to 12:00 and then from 14:30 to 21:00.
- Dress code: long, loose, ankle-length clothing for both men and women, and women also cover their hair with a headscarf. Shorts and short skirts are therefore not enough.
- The guided tour is free: it takes 30 to 45 minutes and, according to The National, starts at 11:00, 13:00 and 17:00, on Fridays only at 11:00 and 17:00. Arrive at the meeting point on the east side of the mosque 15 minutes early.
- What not to bring: food and drinks, not even water. Smoking is not allowed anywhere on the grounds.
- At extra cost: according to The National, the Light & Peace museum and the 360 degree Diya projection cost 25 AED each, or 40 AED together.
The mosque is at its most beautiful in the late afternoon, when the white marble turns golden and lights up at dusk. That is hard to combine with the last train back at 17:43, so if you want the mosque at sunset, go by car.
What is there to see on Saadiyat Island?
Saadiyat is Abu Dhabi's cultural district, and three museums stand close together here: Louvre Abu Dhabi, the Zayed National Museum and the Natural History Museum. All three charge adults 70 AED and let children under 18 in free, which makes it a surprisingly affordable day for a family.
- Louvre Abu Dhabi. A museum under a huge perforated dome where "light rains down", with a collection from prehistory to the present. According to the museum's website, adults pay 70 AED and under 18s enter free. The galleries are open Monday to Thursday from 10:00 to 18:30 and Friday to Sunday until 20:30, and the space under the dome with its cafés stays open until midnight.
- Zayed National Museum. Open since December 2025, with six permanent galleries on the history of the UAE and its founding father, and the outdoor Al Masar Garden with desert, oasis and urban landscapes. According to the museum's website it is open daily from 10:00 to 20:00, last entry one hour before closing, and guided tours are free. Tickets are booked in one-hour slots, and according to Khaleej Times adults pay 70 AED while minors enter free.
- Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi. Dinosaur skeletons and the story of how the Earth evolved, the favourite with children. Adults 70 AED, under 18s free, and the immersive theatre costs an extra 30 AED for adults and 20 AED for children, says the museum's website. The opening hours are the same as the Louvre's.

If you want to see two or three museums, the combined Museums Pass sold by both the Louvre and the Natural History Museum saves money. Saadiyat also has the teamLab Phenomena digital art space and a public beach. And if you are coming in December: the Guggenheim museum of modern and contemporary art opens here on 11 December 2026 in a building by Frank Gehry, a date announced by Abu Dhabi's Department of Culture and Tourism according to Khaleej Times.
What is worth seeing in central Abu Dhabi?
The Qasr Al Watan presidential palace, which is open to the public. You will see the Great Hall, the collection of presidential gifts and the palace library. According to the palace booking website, tickets start at 65 AED for adults and 30 AED for children and include the Palace in Motion light and sound show after dark. Parking and the shuttle bus around the grounds are free. Shoulders and knees must be covered, so the rule is looser than at the mosque.
Close to the palace, the Corniche promenade runs along the coast with beaches, a cycle path and views of the skyline, and walking it costs nothing. At its end stands the Emirates Palace hotel, one of the most lavish hotels in the Emirates, which is enough to photograph from outside. The Corniche also works with the train, as the Etihad Rail shuttle bus runs there from the station in about 45 minutes.
What is there to do on Yas Island?
Yas is the theme park island and the main reason families with children come to Abu Dhabi. The four big parks are close to each other, and according to The National the free Yas Express bus runs between the island's attractions. One-day ticket prices online as listed by the operators on 16 October 2026:
- Ferrari World Abu Dhabi: roller coasters including Formula Rossa, one of the fastest in the world, plus rides for younger children. One day 345 AED according to the park's website.
- Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi: an indoor park with Batman, Looney Tunes and Scooby Doo, the most pleasant choice in the October heat. One day 345 AED according to the park's website.
- Yas Waterworld: a water park with slides for all ages, one day 295 AED according to the park's website.
- SeaWorld Yas Island: according to the operator the world's largest indoor marine life park, with eight ocean realms, adults 375 AED and junior tickets 320 AED according to the park's website.
For a single day, the best value is the "1 Day Any 2 Parks" ticket for 435 AED, which gets you into two parks. Multi-day tickets for two, three or four parks cost 475 AED, 575 AED and 675 AED, are valid for six days, and include parking and the shuttle bus. In early December, Yas belongs to Formula 1: the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at Yas Marina Circuit runs from 4 to 6 December 2026, according to the Formula 1 calendar. If you want to go to the race, expect the island to be busy on those days.

Where can you get into nature in Abu Dhabi?
In the mangroves. Abu Dhabi has belts of mangrove forest along its coast that you can explore on wooden boardwalks or by kayak, and it is the calmest experience of the whole trip. At Jubail Mangrove Park, 2 kilometres of boardwalks run above the water, and entry costs 15 AED according to the Visit Abu Dhabi tourism portal. Kayaking is paid separately and the portal recommends booking ahead; besides daytime routes the park also offers a night tour in glowing kayaks. With a bit of luck you will see herons and turtles. Jubail lies between Saadiyat and Yas, so it fits into either kind of day.
How much do attractions in Abu Dhabi cost?
A culture day is cheap, the theme parks are expensive. Two adults pay 160 AED in total for the mosque and the Louvre, and their children under 18 enter the Louvre free. For a day on Yas with two parks, the same couple pays 870 AED for themselves alone.

How do you plan an Abu Dhabi day trip?
It depends on whether you go by train or by car. Two routes we recommend to our guests:
A culture day by train
- In the morning, take a taxi or the Metro to Al Yalayis station; by car it is 12 minutes from Al Furjan and 19 minutes from Dubai Marina. The timetable of all five services is in the Etihad Rail app.
- Take the train to Mohammed Bin Zayed City station and a taxi from there to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, 15 to 20 minutes.
- Visit the mosque in the morning with your booked pass, ideally with the 11:00 guided tour.
- Take a taxi to Saadiyat, have lunch at a museum restaurant and spend the afternoon at the Louvre or the Zayed National Museum.
- Take a taxi back to Mohammed Bin Zayed City station, allowing 30 to 40 minutes from Saadiyat, for the last train at 17:43.
It is a full day, but it works. If you want the mosque at dusk and the Louvre dome in the evening, go by car or with a driver and come back to the apartment late at night.
A day with children on Yas Island by car
- Drive from Dubai Marina or Al Furjan in the morning and you are on Yas in under an hour, from JVC in 70 minutes.
- Buy a two-park ticket for one day: in the heat, the indoor Warner Bros. World or SeaWorld, with older children Ferrari World.
- Move between the parks on the free Yas Express bus, the car stays in the free car park.
- Drive back to the apartment in the evening, where the children fall asleep in their own beds and nobody has to rush in the morning.

What can we advise our guests on for an Abu Dhabi trip?
We are a Czech real estate and property management company with an office in Arjan, and we live in Dubai. We do not organise trips or transport, we look after apartment rentals and management. We are happy, though, to advise guests in our apartments on how to get to Abu Dhabi, what to fit into one day, when to visit the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and what to wear. Before arrival we send practical instructions, and our own team on the ground deals with anything to do with the apartment, not a call centre in another time zone.
For trips to Abu Dhabi, the best base is the side of Dubai facing the capital:
- Al Furjan, if you want to take the train. Al Yalayis station is 12 minutes away by car, the shortest of all our neighbourhoods, for example this quiet studio apartment in Al Furjan.
- Dubai Marina, if you want the sea after your trip. Yas is under an hour away and the train 19 minutes, for example this one-bedroom apartment a few steps from JBR beach, with more in the list of apartments in Dubai Marina.
- JVC, if you travel as a larger family. The train is 21 minutes away, for example this studio with a separate bonus room in JVC for up to six guests, and the full offer is in the list of properties in JVC. Just as close is the Arjan neighbourhood, where our office is.
If you are choosing where to stay in Dubai, have a look at apartment rentals in Dubai and tell us when you are coming and how many of you there will be, and we will suggest a neighbourhood and a specific apartment. And if you own property in Dubai and want it to earn money in the weeks you are not using it, read what our property management in Dubai involves.
